ROADMAP TO GERMANY

01

InFormation

The VALEO Driver Academy is your dedicated partner if you are a South African professional driver looking to build your career in the German transport market. Working directly on your behalf, we support you as a reliable service provider step by step through the entire qualification and application process to make your career in Europe a reality.

As a driver from South Africa, you benefit from major legal advantages: because South Africa is listed in Annex 11 of the German Driving License Ordinance (FeV), your license is recognized in Germany and can be converted without having to repeat full theoretical and practical driver training at a German driving school. This administrative advantage significantly shortens your path to getting behind the wheel on European roads. You only need to complete the Accelerated Basic Qualification (bGQ) to drive commercially in the European Union. Best of all: you do not need German language skills, as the entire qualification course and exams can be completed directly in English. Your extensive driving experience under demanding conditions, combined with this fast-track legal integration, makes you a highly sought-after professional in the German transport sector.

We are constantly looking for qualified truck drivers, and stepping into this opportunity is fully achievable for any motivated driver. Our selection process is very straightforward: we evaluate your suitability based on criteria such as relevant driving experience on matching vehicle types, genuine employment references, personal reliability, and legal integrity via a clear police clearance certificate. If you meet these points, you secure your spot in our Academy and gain access to a strong network of leading German transport companies. Take your chance for a fast, seamless career start in Germany – we will guide you through every step of the process.

02

Pre-Qualification

In our Academy, you will prepare for the theoretical requirements of the EU Professional Driver Qualification right from home before travelling to Germany. We provide you with structured learning materials, conduct regular knowledge checks, and closely support your learning progress.

The Accelerated Basic Qualification (bGQ) concludes with an official exam conducted by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK). Don't worry—the preparation is very straightforward: it essentially involves studying a defined catalog of exam questions, a selection of which will appear in your final test. In fact, many drivers find this theoretical exam much easier to pass than the original heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driving license test. Everything is completely manageable and well within your reach.

This prep phase is designed to set you up for guaranteed success. Demonstrating strong personal motivation and mastering the study material shows us that you are fully ready for the next step: applying to top transport companies in Germany. By building a solid theoretical foundation in advance, you ensure that your qualification phase in Germany runs quickly, smoothly, and without any complications.

03

Application

Once you successfully complete the pre-qualification phase in our Academy, you are fully prepared to enter the German job market. Since the remaining steps—including your visa, entry to Germany, and final qualification—require close collaboration with your future employer, we take care of the entire application management and strategic coordination on your behalf.

We focus on precise, profile-based matching: we identify companies whose operational needs match your specific driving experience and skill profile. We professionally prepare all your application documents and present them directly to selected transport companies. When a company expresses interest, we arrange a digital job interview so you can meet your potential employer directly.

As soon as a company decides to hire you, we handle the entire remaining administrative process. You won't have to worry about complex bureaucracy—we guide you step by step until you successfully arrive and start your new job in Germany.

04

VISA & Relocation

To make your relocation as smooth as possible, you will enter Germany under a specialized skilled worker visa (§ 19c Abs. 1 AufenthG / § 24a Abs. 2 BeschV). This framework allows you to start your journey legally even before holding a German commercial driver’s license—all you need is your valid South African driving license and a contract with your future employer.

At VALEO Driver Academy, we take care of the heavy administrative lifting. We coordinate directly with the German Embassy, local immigration authorities, and the Federal Employment Agency to process your visa seamlessly. Should official processing times drag out, we initiate the accelerated fast-track procedure for skilled workers to ensure a prompt arrival date. From handling contract documents to organizing mandatory health insurance, we manage all the formal details behind the scenes so that your transition remains secure.

When you land in Germany, our team actively guides you through the essential administrative steps: registering your residential address at the city office, opening your German bank account, and managing the initial settling-in setup. Regarding housing, finding a permanent apartment right away from abroad can be challenging. We actively assist you during the search process, which often starts with simpler, temporary options like shared flats or basic rooms. Once you are settled in Germany with a stable salary and a permanent employment contract, finding a good, long-term apartment becomes significantly easier.

While settling in, you will complete the remaining qualification steps at our certified partner driving schools. Once you pass your exams, we arrange your final appointment with the immigration office to convert your entry visa into a long-term German residence permit, ensuring a seamless start to your new career and life in Europe.

05

Qualification

Once you arrive in Germany, your qualification process moves quickly toward completion. You will participate in an intensive one-month training course that covers the legally required 130 hours of theoretical instruction and 10 hours of practical driving. Because you already laid a strong foundation through our pre-qualification phase back home, you will typically sit for the official Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) exam within your first or second month. During this dedicated qualification phase, you are fully released from regular work duties so you can focus entirely on your studies, while we work closely alongside you to manage the official conversion of your South African driving license.

We understand that relocating and sitting for exams in a new country can feel challenging, but our entire system is designed for your success. Our pre-selection process and home-prep testing ensure that you only sit for the official IHK exam when you are thoroughly prepared, completely confident, and ready to pass on your first attempt.

06

REAdy for Road

As soon as you pass your IHK exam and complete all driver qualifications, you are fully licensed and ready to start driving commercially across Germany and the EU. Through our close cooperation with your employer and our hands-on support, all the administrative hurdles are cleared in advance, allowing you to transition directly onto the road and launch your long-term career without unnecessary delay.

07

Contract

To ensure maximum legal certainty and protect both sides, every participant signs a clear, legally binding training and service contract directly with the VALEO Driver Academy. This agreement officially comes into effect upon signature and covers the entire duration of your qualification journey in Germany.
