You only need to complete the Accelerated Basic Qualification to drive commercially in the European Union [EU]. It provides practical knowledge for the EU on eco-driving, cargo securing, passenger safety, legal regulations such as driving and resting times, as well as managing emergencies and road risks. It is simpler than retaking a driving test and is entirely achievable for every driver. There is no reason to be concerned. To obtain the Accelerated Basic Qualification, drivers complete 140 hours of compulsory training, consisting of 130 hours of theoretical instruction and 10 hours of practical driving, which takes only 4 to 6 weeks to complete. After completing the course, candidates must pass a 90-minute digital exam on a computer at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry [IHK], with no additional practical driving test required. The test is based on a pool of around 550 questions, making preparation predictable and easily manageable to pass without any issues. There is a dedicated learning app available for these exam questions, allowing you to study everything quickly and easily right from your phone both before you arrive and alongside your training course. The questions are straightforward and come in single-choice and multiple-choice questions, along with occasional questions where you simply type in a number. Out of a maximum of 60 points on the exam, you only need to score at least half to pass. Best of all: you do not need German language skills, as the entire qualification course and exams can be completed directly in English.

Pre-Qualification

At our Academy, your preparation for the theoretical side of the EU Professional Driver Qualification begins right at home before you move to Germany. With our guidance, you can confidently work through the self-explanatory 550-question pool at your own pace and build a rock-solid foundation long before setting foot in the classroom. We provide clear learning structures, run regular knowledge checks, and support your progress every step of the way. To maximize efficiency, this pre-qualification phase takes place concurrently while you organize your passport, compile your visa application documents, and process your job application. Once you arrive in Germany for the official Accelerated Basic Qualification course — consisting of 130 hours of theory and 10 hours of practical driving — you will already have a solid foundation. This allows you to deepen your knowledge step by step and go into the exam fully prepared to succeed.

To start practicing the 550 test questions requires the official learning app, which costs €35 [approx. R670]. You need to invest this amount upfront. Only candidates who master all the questions and show consistent progress and clear commitment will advance to the final qualification stage in Germany (preparation course and exam). This step avoids costly risks for both sides and ensures you are capable of passing the exam, so your investment pays off. Application

Once you successfully complete the pre-qualification phase in our academy, you are fully prepared to move to Germany. Since the remaining steps — including your visa and final qualification — require close collaboration with your future employer, we take care of the entire application management and strategic coordination on your behalf. We focus on precise, profile-based matching, connecting you with transport companies that specifically need your driving experience and skill set. We help you prepare your application documents, present them directly to selected employers, and arrange digital job interviews when companies express interest.

VISA &Relocation

To ensure your relocation to Germany is as seamless and legally secure as possible, your entry is structured under a specialized skilled worker visa in accordance with § 19c (1) Residence Act (AufenthG) in conjunction with § 24a (2) Employment Regulation (BeschV). This specific legal pathway allows professional commercial drivers from non-EU countries to enter Germany with their valid national driving license (such as a South African/ Namibian license) and an employment contract to complete the mandatory German qualifications on-site.

Should official processing times drag out, we initiate the accelerated fast-track procedure for skilled workers to ensure a prompt arrival date. Please note that your visa application must be submittedin person through the official German diplomatic representation or visa application center in either Cape Town or Pretoria, depending on your local jurisdiction. Making the journey to attend this mandatory in-person appointment is an essential step of the administrative process, so you should plan ahead for any necessary travel within South Africa to submit your documents and biometric data.

Contract

To ensure maximum legal certainty and protect both sides, every participant signs a clear, legally binding training and service contract directly with the VALEO Driver Academy prior to entering Germany. Coming officially into effect upon signature, this agreement transparently outlines all rights and obligations for the entire duration of your qualification journey, ensuring a safe, risk-free process with clear expectations for everyone involved. This gives you complete peace of mind in a foreign country, knowing you can rely fully on us to guide you through every legal and bureaucratic step required to officially and legally start your career in Germany.

Qualification

Once our drivers arrive in Germany, we handle the entire end-to-end process to ensure they are fully licensed and legally qualified to drive commercial trucks or buses within the European Union. Operating a commercial vehicle in the EU requires two key steps: converting the foreign driver's license into a German one and completing the Accelerated Basic Qualification. Only after both requirements are fulfilled can drivers officially begin their commercial driving duties.

To convert a South African driver's license to a German one, several administrative and health criteria must be met, including submitting proof of residency in Germany, a valid passport or visa, and the original South African license accompanied by a certified translation, as well as passing medical fitness and eye examinations, completing a standard first aid course, and providing a biometric passport photo. To make this process as seamless as possible, we organize every single step so that every driver can fulfill all of these requirements easily and without any issues.

Upon your arrival in Germany, our primary focus is ensuring you obtain your required Accelerated Basic Qualification as quickly as possible. We arrange for you to begin the official training course promptly, which runs for approximately four to five weeks and covers the legally required 130 hours of theoretical instruction and 10 hours of practical driving. This intensive environment allows you to perfect and build upon the knowledge you acquired back home. Alongside the classroom instruction, you will continue practicing the official exam questions using your purchased app to sharpen your skills and deepen your preparation.

During the qualification phase, you are employed under a fixed-term contract with your future employer, ensuring full German health insurance and social security coverage from day one. Since attending the full-time course prevents you from working regular shifts during this period, these unworked course hours are recorded on a working time account [Arbeitszeitkonto]. Once you successfully pass the exam and receive your full commercial driving credentials, you begin your regular driving duties and gradually work off the accrued hours.

We understand that relocating and sitting for exams in a new country can feel challenging, but our entire system is designed for your success.
